Best Wall Safes: Fire-Rated, Heavy-Duty, and Between-the-Studs Picks

A wall safe’s best feature is that nobody knows it’s there. Its biggest limit is the wall itself. A standard 2×4 interior wall has about 3½ inches of stud depth behind the drywall, so a wall safe either fits that shallow bay or needs a deeper spot like a closet backing onto another closet.

That’s why this guide sorts picks by the depth they need. Our best home safes roundup names one small wall safe, the Paragon Quarter Master 7750. This guide covers more depths and ratings, and our comparison of wall, floor, and freestanding safes explains when a wall safe is the right type at all.

How we chose

We didn’t test these safes ourselves. Picks are based on published specs and ratings:

  • Wall depth first. Each pick lists its outside depth, so you can match it to your wall before buying.
  • Ratings by source. We say whether a fire rating carries a UL label or is only the maker’s claim. Most wall safes have no fire rating at all, and none of our picks lists a water rating or a UL burglary rating.
  • Ratings as stated. UL fire ratings and UL lock listings are reported as each manufacturer states them. We didn’t look them up in UL’s directory, so ask the seller for the label if a rating decides your purchase.
  • Manufacturer specs only. Dimensions, weights, locks, and construction are from each maker’s product page or catalog, listed in Sources.
  • Recalls checked. We searched CPSC’s recall database for AMSEC, Gardall, and Hollon on October 17, 2026, and found no recalls for their safes.
  • No prices. They change too often.

Best fire protection in a wall: AMSEC WFS149E5LP

Who it’s for: Anyone who wants a hidden safe that also carries an independent fire rating.

Fire-rated wall safes are rare because insulation takes up depth. The WFS149 carries a UL fire rating of 60 minutes at 1,700°F, the same time and temperature listed for UL one-hour (Class 350) document safes such as the FireKing Turtle. AMSEC lists a 2.125-inch body filled with a fire clay mix, a ½-inch steel door, and ½-inch steel deadbolts on the side.

Key specs (per AMSEC):

  • Exterior: 19.5 x 14 x 15.375 inches (H x W x D)
  • Interior: 15.25 x 9.75 x 9.88 inches, with one drawer shelf
  • Weight: 104 pounds
  • Lock: ESL5LP electronic

Trade-offs: AMSEC says it fits between wall studs, and at 14 inches wide it will fit a 16-inch on-center stud bay. But at more than 15 inches deep, it won’t fit inside a standard wall. Plan on a closet backing, a built-in cabinet, or a framed box. At 104 pounds, it also needs solid support underneath. AMSEC doesn’t list a water rating.

Best fire-rated pick with a key option: Gardall WMS129

Who it’s for: People who want UL fire protection in a wall and prefer a key lock over a keypad.

Gardall’s catalog marks the WMS129 with a UL 350°F one-hour label for fire and impact. The WMS129 comes with a 2-inch flange and bolt-down hardware. Gardall builds it with either a key lock (WMS129-G-K) or an electronic lock (WMS129-G-E), per its catalog.

Key specs (per Gardall’s 2022 catalog):

  • Outside: 17¼ x 14 x 15¼ inches; inside: 12¾ x 9½ x 10¼ inches
  • Weight: about 101 pounds
  • Add 1½ inches to outside depth for the dial and handle

Trade-offs: Gardall is blunt about installation. These safes need two closets back to back or a spot under a stairwell, because standard 4- or 6-inch walls are too shallow. No water rating is listed.

Best heavy-duty safe for a standard wall: Gardall GSL4000/F

Who it’s for: Homeowners with a normal 2×4 wall who want a stronger door than typical stud-bay safes have.

Most between-the-studs safes use thin sheet-steel doors. Gardall’s GSL series uses a ¼-inch plate steel door and comes standard with a UL Group II mechanical lock, with a UL Group II electronic lock as an option. Gardall says it’s designed to fit between 16-inch on-center studs, with pre-drilled anchor holes and a 1-inch flange that covers the cut edge.

Key specs (per Gardall):

  • GSL4000/F outside: 12⅜ x 14⅜ x 4 inches; inside: 12 x 14 x 2¾ inches (446 cubic inches); 37 pounds
  • GSL6000/F for 6-inch walls: 4½-inch inside depth (756 cubic inches); 41 pounds
  • One removable shelf
  • Hand-built in Syracuse, New York

Trade-offs: No fire rating, and the shelf isn’t adjustable. With 2¾ inches of inside depth, the 4-inch version suits passports, cash, and jewelry boxes rather than bulky items.

Best thick-steel pick for a deeper wall: AMSEC WS1214

Who it’s for: Spaces with about 10 inches of depth, such as a 2×6 wall with a closet behind it or a built-in cabinet, where you want more steel than a stud-bay safe offers.

AMSEC builds the WS1214 from 7-gauge steel. A carburized hardplate protects the lock, a spring-loaded relocker triggers if someone punches the lock, and a dead bar behind the hinge keeps the door in place even if the hinges are cut off. Three 1-inch chrome-plated bolts lock the door.

Key specs (per AMSEC):

  • Exterior: 12.625 x 14 x 10 inches (H x W x D)
  • Interior: 12.25 x 13.63 x 5.25 inches
  • Weight: 86 pounds
  • Lock: ESL5 electronic

Trade-offs: No fire rating. Ten inches of depth rules out a standard wall without building out.

Best simple stud-bay safe: Hollon WSE-2114

Who it’s for: Homeowners who want a tall, quick-to-install safe in an ordinary wall.

The WSE-2114 fits a standard stud bay. Its base, the part that goes into the wall, measures 21 x 13⅞ x 3¾ inches. Inside, it offers about half a cubic foot across two shelves, enough for flat papers, cash, and other small items. Hollon says plainly that wall safes get most of their security from being hidden. It notes that most are attached to studs and suggests concreting one in place for extra protection.

Key specs (per Hollon):

  • Exterior with lip: 22³⁄₁₆ x 14¹⁵⁄₁₆ x 4 inches; interior: 19 x 14 x 3⅛ inches (about 0.50 cubic feet)
  • Weight: 28 pounds
  • Door: ⅛-inch steel
  • Lock: electronic, with key override (depth behind the keypad is 1⅜ inches)

Trade-offs: A ⅛-inch door is light protection, and there’s no fire rating. Hollon’s listed interior width (14 inches) is slightly larger than its listed base width (13⅞ inches), so treat the numbers as approximate and measure the safe before you cut. Treat it as a hiding place with a lock, not a vault.

Best stud-bay safe with a recessed door: AMSEC WEST2114

Who it’s for: Anyone who wants a full-height stud-bay safe with a little more door protection than a basic model.

The WEST2114 fits the same kind of space as the Hollon, with a 4-inch outside depth. AMSEC builds it from 14-gauge steel, with dual live bolts and a pry-resistant recessed door on internal hinges. The DL6000 electronic lock includes an emergency key override with two keys, a power override box, a spy-proof entry feature, and a motion detector alert.

Key specs (per AMSEC):

  • Exterior: 21.125 x 13.875 x 4 inches (H x W x D)
  • Interior: 20.88 x 13.75 x 2.88 inches, with a carpeted base and two removable shelves
  • Weight: 31 pounds

Trade-offs: No fire rating, and 14-gauge steel is still sheet steel, not plate. Like any stud-bay safe, it depends on staying hidden.

FAQ

Will a wall safe fit between my studs?

Width usually works: most wall safes are about 14 inches wide, made for 16-inch on-center studs. Depth is the catch. A 2×4 wall has about 3½ inches of stud depth, plus the drywall you cut through, so look for an outside depth near 4 inches with a front lip, like the Gardall GSL4000/F, Hollon WSE-2114, or AMSEC WEST2114.

Are wall safes fireproof?

Most aren’t fire-rated. Of our picks, only the AMSEC WFS149E5LP and Gardall WMS129 carry UL fire ratings, and both need deep installations. For papers in a shallow wall safe, see protecting documents from fire and water.

Can a burglar just cut the safe out of the wall?

A stud-mounted safe can be pried or cut out with enough time. That’s why concealment matters and why Hollon suggests concreting one in place. Cameras and alarms buy time too; see home security cameras and alarms for protecting a safe.

Should I keep everything in a wall safe?

Use it for small, frequently used items. Bulk valuables and irreplaceable papers are better off in a heavier, anchored safe or a safe deposit box.

Do I need a professional to install one?

A stud-bay safe is a manageable DIY project if you can find studs and cut drywall cleanly. Deep, heavy fire-rated models usually need framing or carpentry, so consider a pro.

Bottom line

For fire protection hidden in a wall, the AMSEC WFS149E5LP and Gardall WMS129 are the UL-rated options, as long as you have a deep spot to install them. For an ordinary 2×4 wall, the Gardall GSL4000/F pairs a plate-steel door with a UL Group II lock. The AMSEC WS1214 offers thicker steel for deeper walls, and the Hollon WSE-2114 and AMSEC WEST2114 are simple stud-bay choices. Measure your wall before anything else.
