Welcome to The Secure Stash — a practical guide to home safes, document protection, and storing the things you can’t afford to lose.
Why this site exists
Most people buy a safe once, often in a hurry after a scare: a break-in down the street, a wildfire warning, a basement flood, or the realization that the family’s passports and deeds are sitting in a desk drawer. Shopping for a safe in that moment is confusing. Product listings throw around terms like “fireproof,” “waterproof,” “UL Classified,” “ETL Verified,” “RSC,” and “TL-15” without explaining what any of them actually mean — or what they don’t mean.
The Secure Stash exists to translate those labels into plain English so you can match the right kind of protection to the thing you’re protecting.
What you’ll find here
- Plain-language explainers on fire ratings, burglary ratings, and water-resistance claims, grounded in the published standards and manufacturer documentation.
- Storage guides for specific valuables: important documents, cash, jewelry, bullion and coins, digital backups, and family keepsakes.
- Buying guides that describe the features to look for in each category of safe and point you to examples.
How we work (and what we don’t claim)
We want to be upfront about how this site is made:
- We do not run lab tests. We don’t burn, drill, or submerge safes. When we say a safe has a certain rating, we’re reporting the rating from the manufacturer or the testing body (such as UL or Intertek/ETL), and we link to our sources.
- We research, cite, and update. Every guide lists its sources at the bottom. If a standard changes or we find an error, we correct it.
- We use AI assistance. Drafts are researched and written with the help of AI tools and then reviewed and edited by a human before publishing. See our AI Use Statement.
- We earn commissions. Some links are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. See our Affiliate Disclosure.
- We’re not your insurer, lawyer, or security consultant. Our guides are general information. For high-value collections, talk to your insurance agent and a qualified safe professional or locksmith.
Our guiding principle
No safe is perfect, and no single product protects against every threat. The best setup is usually a combination: the right rating for your main risk, a smart location, anchoring, good records, digital backups, and the right insurance. We’ll help you think through all of it.
